Eggplant or Brinjal grown in the hilly forests, called ‘Tlang Manta‘ in Hmar, has a bitter taste than normal eggplant grown in the plains. The vegetable is mostly cooked with fermented fish and fermented pork as Changalhme (a dish that involves adding Changal or its today’s replacement – Baking Soda).

The Hill Eggplant or simply Eggplant can also be prepared with other green vegetables and meat, preferably smoked meat to make an indigenous cuisine. An Eggplant can also be roasted over fire, and pounded with roasted green chilli to make a chutney.
