Black Cardamom (Aihretil in Hmar) is a delicacy among the Hmars and its kindred Chin-Kuki-Mizo communities. It is usually cooked with fermented pork as Sathu Changalhme.
Interestingly, Aizawl, the State capital of Mizoram in India, derived its name from the plant. In Mizo, Black Cardamom is called ‘Aidu’. The ‘Ai’ in Aizawl comes from ‘Aidu’ and ‘Zawl’ means ‘Flat’.
